Nelson is a city in the Southern Interior of British Columbia, Canada. Located at an elevation of 535 m (1,755 ft), on the extreme West Arm of Kootenay Lake, Nelson covers 11.93 sq km (4.61 sq mi) and has a population of just over 10,000 people (2012 estimate).
The Nelson area was traditionally inhabited by the Sinixt and Ktunaxa tribes of First Nations people. A settlement was established here in the second half of the 19th century, after gold and silver were discovered in the area. Discovery of more silver ore at nearby Toad Mountain in 1886 helped drive growth, resulting in the construction of railway lines.
From a frontier town that sprouted from mining, Nelson matured into a stable city with fine buildings designed by Francis Fattenbury, one of the most renowned architects in British Columbia.
