Red Deer is the third largest city in Alberta, Canada, behind Calgary and Edmonton. Located between Edmonton to the north and Calgary to the south, Red Deer covers 104.29 sq km (40.27 sq mi) and has a population of 91,000 people (2012 estimate).

Until the arrival of European settlers, the Red Deer area was inhabited by various First Nations tribes including the Blackfoot, Plains Cree and Stoney. The site of the present city was first developed in 1875, when Fort Calgary was established. When the Canadian Pacific Railway was built through the area, traffic increased, helping the city to establish itself. Red Deer was incorporated as a town in 1901, and as a city in 1913.

Red Deer is located in aspen parkland, at an elevation of 855 m (2,805 ft). It experiences a humid continental climate with a semi-arid influence. July is the warmest month, when average high temperature rises to 22.6°C (72.7°F). January is the coldest month, when the average low temperature drops to -17.4°C (0.7°F). Annual precipitation is at 487 mm (19.2 in) with July being the wettest month.
