Chillán is a city in the Biobío Region of Chile. It covers 511 sq km (197 sq mi) and has a populaiton of 162,000 (2011 estimate).

Although generally grouped as part of southern Chile, Chillán is in fact close to the geographical center of the country. It was founded in 1580 as San Bartolomé de Chillán by Martín de Gamboa. The town is most famous for producing Bernardo O'Higgins, Chile's hero of independence from Spain.

You can reach Chillán from Santiago by bus and train. The journey is about five hours.
