Curacautín is a city in Malleco Province, in Araucanía Region, Chile. It covers 1,664.2 sq km (642.6 sq mi) and has a population of 18,000 people (2012 estimate).
The name Curacautín means "gathering stone" in the native Mapudungun language. The area is noted for its natural beauty. It is close two the Conquillío National Park and Tolhuaca National Park, as well as the Malleco, Malalcahuello and Nalca National Reserves. Curacautín is within a valley near three volcanoes, the Tolhuaca, Lonquimay and Llaima, all visible from the city.
Curacautín traces its history to 1882, when Gregorio Urrutia Venegas built a fort here. The city became a producer of timber and timber products by the early 20th century. Railway lines constructed during this period helped to improve the economy.
