El Salvador is a mining town in Chañaral Province, Atacama Region, Chile. It is located in the middle of the Atacama Desert, about 2,300 meters above sea level, at the foothills of the Andes. The town has a population of 6,000 people (2012 estimate), down from a peak of 15,000.

El Salvador is a town created for the sole purpose of extracting copper. Before the arrival of the Spanish, the indigenous tribes particularly the Atacameños have been extracting copper for over a thousand years. Modern mining only began in the mid 20th century. In 1954 mineralization was discovered. This led to the founding of El Salvador in 1959.

By 2001, a study conducted determined that the copper ore was exhausting. El Salvador is expected to shut down by soon, if it has not already done so.
