Pichilemu is a beach resort city in Cardenal Caro Province, O'Higgins Region, Chile. It covers 749.1 sq km (289.2 sq mi) and has a population of 14,000 people (2012 estimate).
Located to the southwest of Santiago, Pichilemu was founded in 1891. Before that, politician Agustín Ross Edwards had already bought land in the area, with the intention of turning the place into a high-class beach resort. The area was formerly inhabited by the Promaucaes tribe of hunter-gatherers and fishermen.
As with many coastal communities in Chile, Pichilemu was severely affected by the 2010 Chilean earthquake and tsunami. Tourism is the main industry here. The city has a heritage zone gazetted in 2004 protecting some of its historic buildings and quarters.
