The city covers 165 sq km (63.7 sq mi) and has a population of 608,000 people (2011 estimate), within a metropolitan area of 1.2 million people. The city of Bucaramanga has spread out to include surrounding towns of Floridablanca, Girón and Piedecuesta, which together forms the Bucaramanga metropolitan area. The oldest of these towns is Girón, established even earlier than Bucaramanga, which was founded in 1622. Bucaramanga only overtook Girón in size in the early 19th century.
