Colón, Panama Source: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Colonhus.JPG Author: Osopolar
Colón is the seaport on the Atlantic entrance to the Panama Canal. It is on the coast facing the Caribbean Sea. With the disestablishment of the Canal Zone, Colón now includes neighboring Canal Zone towns of Cristóbal, Rainbow City, Margarita and Coco Solo.
Colón was established by the Americans in 1850 as the terminus for the Panama Railway. That was during the California gold rush, and the port provided a fast route to reach California. It was built on a marshy islet which was connected to the mainland by a causeway.
Visiting Colón
There is a train service between Panama City and Colón which follows a section of the Panama Canal. It is also visited by cruise ships.
