Cristóbal is a port town on the Atlantic side of the Panama Canal. Since the disestablishment of the Canal Zone, Cristóbal is now part of the city of Colón. Both Cristóbal and Colón are derived from the Spanish translation of Christopher Columbus, the Italian-born explorer.
In similar fashion to the neighboring towns, Cristóbal was founded in the mid 19th century when the Panama Railroad was constructed. Cristóbal was created to expand on the are of the port of Colón. The French Inter-Ocean Canal Company used the earth excavated from their canal works to fill the coral reef next to the Panama Railroad area, establishing the French facilities of Christophe Colombe, which was then translated into Spanish as Cristóbal Colón.
Cristóbal became an important town during the construction of the Panama Canal. The construction material for the canal arrived through here, as well as most of the workers and supplies.
Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
