Branson was founded in 1882, when it was established with a general store and post office. The town was named after the postmaster Reuben Branson. It was formally incorporated in 1912. The following year the Powersite Dam across the White River was completed. It created Lake Taneycomo in the vicinity of the town. Later on in 1958, another dam called the Table Rock Dam was also built across the White River, creating Table Rock Lake.
It is said that a Boy Scout camping trip in the Ozarks inspired Paul Henning to create the sitcom Beverly Hillbillies in 1962. Success from the show enabled Henning to donate a 1,534-acre land for the creation of the Ruth and Paul Henning Conservation Area, which is close to Branson.
