The Dairy got its name because cows used to graze in front of the building, and children would get fresh milk and other refreshments there. Over the years the building became dilapidated. In 1979 it was restored to its original appearance. Restorers based the restoration on old photographs and drawings of the building.

Today the Dairy is used as the Central Park Visitor Center. People going to Central Park can get maps of the park there before they begin exploring it.
