Coenties Alley is a pedestrian walkway in the Financial District of Manhattan. It is very old, having been around for centuries. The alley is perpendicular to William Street and Pearl Street to which it links. A short distance to the south is Coenties Slip, another pedestrian alleyway. Both of these were named after Conraet Ten Eyck and his wife Antje, a Dutch couple who were the original land owner in the area.
Coenties Alley was originally called City Hall Lane. That is because New York City once had its city hall there during the Dutch administration. It was known as Stadt Huys, meaning "state house", and was built in 1642.
