Eldridge Street Synagogue in Manhattan is the first large synagogue in the United States. It was built by Jews who immigrated to New York City from Eastern Europe in the Moorish style, making it stand out from the rest of the building in the neighborhood. It could house as many as 1,000 worshippers at one time, but over time the congregants soon left the neighborhood, causing the synagogue to close down in the 1950's.
Three decades later, concerned citizens raised funds to have the synagogue restored. Today it stands as a National Historic Landmark.
