Fifth Avenue is a major road that runs through the center of Manhattan, New York City. It passes through neighborhoods with expensive park-view properties as well as historical mansions. The stretch of Fifth Avenue between 34th and 59th Streets is also the most famous shopping street in New York City, on par with Oxford Street in London, and the Champs-Élysées in Paris. That stretch, particularly between 49th and 57th streets, is also one of the most expensive real estate in the world.
Fifth Avenue starts at the Harlem River, at the intersection with 142nd Street. From there, it is a two-way street until 135th street. From that intersection onwards, Fifth Avenue has been a one-way southbound avenue since the early 1960s.
Fifth Avenue passes the eastern side of Central Park. Unlike the other numbered streets and avenues around the park, Fifth Avenue retains its name (rather than being renamed Central Park East), though it is called Museum Mile for the stretch from 82nd to 105th streets on the Upper East Side.
Fifth Avenue forms the dividing line between eastern and western streets of the same number in Manhattan. For example, it separates E 59th St from W 59th St. Numbers on the street addresses increase in both directions as one moves away from Fifth Avenue.
