Armenian Street Park is a proposed public park of the
George Town Special Area Plan located in the Armenian Street Historic Enclave. The park covers 0.44 acres and is presently existing. It is bounded by
Armenian Street to the north and
Acheen Street to the south.
Appreciating the History of this Site
The proposed Armenian Street Park is located on the site that was formerly an Acheenese-Malay kampong. It is part of the village area that extends from the
Acheen Street Mosque, and was founded in the late 18th century when Tengku Sheriff Syed Hussain Al-Aidid relocated from Aceh. Properties on the south side of Acheen Street still belong to descendents of the Acheenese community.
Today the proposed Armenian Street Park faces the
Syed Alatas Mansion, which houses the
Penang Islamic Museum. It is the grandest Malay-style bungalow within the historic enclave.
