Old Georgetown Cafe (GPS: .41679, 100.33065) is a coffee shop in George Town, Penang. It is located along Prangin Road, across the road from Komtar Walk. The coffee shop has a number of stalls. The coffee shop also has an upper floor which is also open to patrons when the ground floor is fully occupied.

My wife and I visited it during our recent review stay of Areca Hotel. We went to explore the surroundings of the hotel, to see what's available to eat, and came upon this coffee shop. I later learned that it opened on 4 August, 2017, so it has been open for just a few months when we visited. The building used to house Kim Yew Hardware & Trading Sdn Bhd.

I noticed two Hokkien Mee stall. One of these is the famous Hokkien Mee from Bangkok Lane, which won a street food competition some time back. I have known and liked that Hokkien Mee, but it only sold till 4:00pm, so by the time I visited Old Georgetown Cafe, it has called it a day. The other Hokkien Mee stall was operating in the evening though. I saw people eating, so we decided to order two bowls. Small is RM5 while big is RM6 (as of November 2017). I went for the RM6 bowl.

In addition to the Hokkien Mee stall, I saw a stall selling Nyonya Asam Laksa. There are also stalls for Oyster Omelette, Nasi Lemak, Satay, Nibong Tebal Pork Noodles, Rojak and Pao. Back to our Hokkien Mee, here's how it looks like.

The Hokkien Mee looks good, doesn't it? Well, I have experienced Hokkien Mee that looked better than they taste, so, even after taking photos of it, I reserve judgement until I have tasted it. Because I was busy taking photos of the coffee shop, my wife did the mixing of my bowl of Hokkien Mee for me. It appears that the RM6 bowl is quite a big bowl, good portion. It has quite a lot of noodle, even though not much ingredients or "liau". I did see a sign on the stall saying extra charge for more ingredients. Nevermind, I'll try it as it is.

Oh, it is very good. I love it. It has both the taste and aroma of Hokkien Mee, and I dare say it is as good as the "other Hokkien Mee stall". At RM6, I would like my Hokkien Mee to have a little more liau, but other than that, I enjoyed this Hokkien Mee very much.

If ever I return to Old Georgetown Cafe, I hope to try the other stalls.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
