My wife enjoying her seafood rice set at Red Chopsticks (26 December 2016)
Red Chopsticks is one of the restaurants that come to our mind whenever we think of good Penang food in a restaurant setting. The restaurant is run my friend Tee Peck Siang, who once studied cooking under the famous Penang cooking teacher, Datuk Lim Bian Yiam, whose cooking classes has created many restaurant operators as well as cooking teachers and authors. Although we have eaten here many times, there are still dishes at Red Chopsticks which we haven't yet tried. That's because the restaurant introduces new items to its menu every now and then.
Today we had our most recent visit. It was at Peck Siang's invitation. Once again my wife and I were treated to a delicious meal. As my wife prefers a rice meal, today she tried the seafood rice set, which has rice (with a portion dyed with bunga telang or butterfly pea flower) and an array of accompanying dishes. The dishes include ladies fingers, prawns, crackers, kangkung and otak-otak springroll. Also included is a small bowl of laksa soup.
Me, I decided to try Red Chopsticks' Hokkien Mee. I was told that the restaurant would usually serve this Hokkien Mee to Datuk Lim whenever he came to visit. The Hokkien Mee has a rich soup. Peck Siang told me that to make the soup, they fried prawn shells which were then blended and then skimmed, so the result is the very tasty prawn-based soup. Certainly not the soup for people who are health conscious, but if you want the taste of Hokkien Mee, you should try this, though in moderation. I certainly enjoyed it to the last drop, and when I finished my Hokkien Mee, I have also consumed all its soup. (Now I must eat healthily for the rest of the week!)
The next time we tried is the Bubor Cha Cha. It is served in a large bowl, enough for at least three persons. The Bubor Cha Cha has various coloured starch jelly, beans, and other items. My wife commented that it is too sweet for her, but I love it, and I told Peck Siang I am fine that it is sweet. I suppose different people will have different ideas, but as far as I am concerned, dessert has to be sweet, and as long as you take sweet stuff sparingly, and you are not diabetic, an occasional sweet dessert is fine.
The final item we had that evening was rojak. It certainly completed our meal of Penang food. The Red Chopstick rojak has things like cherry tomatoes and green apples. They mix well with the crispy fried eu char koay.
It was such an enjoyable meal, with enjoyable company, that we had at Red Chopsticks. We thank Peck Siang for the hospitality, and look forward to another future visit, to try out something different from the extensive menu.

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
