Market Nasi Kandar, best Nasi Kandar in Penang (2 May 2008)
When I look for the Best Nasi Kandar in Penang, I stay away from all the 24-hour nasi kandar stalls that have mushroomed in the past ten years. Also, I don't go for the already famous nasi kandar stalls in town, such as Line Clear and Beratur, because they have grown too big. Instead, I search out the standalone stalls that have been part of the Penang nasi kandar culture for over a century. These are the stalls where you can find authentic Penang nasi kandar, using secret recipes handed down over the generation. None of the 24-hour nasi kandar stalls can compare.
I have had favourite nasi kandar stalls since I was small, many of them have closed up after its owner ceased business or moved back to India, so finding a good nasi kandar stall has been a long endeavour.
Pasar Nasi Kandar, Bayan Baru Hawker Centre (2 May 2008)
The best Nasi Kandar stall in Penang, in my opinion, is the Market Nasi Kandar, or Nasi Kandar Pasar, located at the Bayan Baru Market. It stall has since changed its name to Restoran Farsal, but I believe the taste is the same. I like this stall because of its great combination of spices, the fish and beef curries which are all very tasty. What makes this nasi kandar so special? Undoubtedly, it's the gravy, or curry. The combination of different curries makes for a special blend when generously dashed to hot white rice.
I usually have a plate with a piece of beef, a fish, a few ladies fingers and half a boiled egg. Truly ho liau! I don't take it too regularly, on account of the cholesterol associated with such meals, but relish having it once in a while.
