The Palace of the Roman Emperor Diocletian is an ancient building in Split, Croatia. It was built by the emperor at the turn of the 4th century AD. Diocletian built the palace as preparation for his retirement on 1 May 305 AD. The palace faces a bay about 4 miles from the Roman provincial capital of Salona.
After the Romans abandoned the site, Diocletian's Palace remained a derelict for centuries until the 7th century, when locals sought refuge there against invading barbarians. It has been occupied since then. The locals established homes and businesses within the palace basement and directly in its walls, many of which can be seen today.
The Diocletian's Palace is the most important historical building in Split. It was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 3rd session of the World Heritage Committee meeting in Cairo and Luxor, Egypt, on 22-26, October, 1979.
