Haapsalu is a resort town on the west coast of Estonia. Part of Lääne County, it has a population of 12,000 people (2011 estimate).
Haapsalu has a history going back to 1279. It was part of the bishipric of Ösel-Wiek and has the largest single-nave cathedral among the Baltic states. Its location by the sea has made it a popular summer resort, particularly for the wealthy and the aristocrats from Saint Petersburg.
Haapsalu is popular for its mud therapy, which is said to provide relief to a number of ailments. Today the town has a number of mud spas catering to a steady stream of patrons.
