Blois traces its beginnings to the 6th century, when it was mentioned by Gregory of Tours. The town was used as a base by Joan of Arc in 1429 for the relief operations of Orléans.
By the 16th century, the people of Blois who included many Calvinists saw themselves fighting against the Catholic Church. The bishopric is seated at the Blois Cathedral.
Blois suffered severe bombings during the Second World War. It was occupied by the Nazis in 1940 and liberated by the Americans on August 1944.
