Issoire is a small town in the district of Puy-de-Dôme, in Auvergne, France. The town is located at the confluence of the river Couze with the river Allier. It is about 40 km (25 mi) to the south of Clermont-Ferrand. Issoire covers 20 sq km (7.6 sq mi) and has a population of 14,500 people (2012 estimate).
Issoire is situated in Petites Limagnes, the fertile plain of the river Allier. Human habitation here has been traced to Roman times. The town was one of the sites in France which saw heavy fighting between the Roman Catholics and the Protestant during the Reformation of 1574. The Protestants captured the town and treated those of the Catholic faith cruelly. However the Catholics eventually recaptured the town in 1577, and retaliated against the Protestants.
