Saint-Malo is a walled medieval town in the district of Ille-et-Vilaine, in Brittany, France. It covers 37 sq km (14 sq mi) and has a population of 47,000 people (2012 estimate).
Saint-Malo traces its history to before the Roman period, although the present town dates to the Middle Ages, when it developed out of a fortified island. As would be expected, it was a place where smuggling and piracy was rife. The town even declared itself independent, from 1490 to 1493.
Today Saint-Malo has developed into a tourist destination. It has the highest concentration of bite restaurants in Europe.
How to go to Saint-Malo
From Rennes, take Route D137 heading northwest to reach Saint-Malo. There are high-speed TGV trains from the Montparnasse station in Paris to Saint-Muros station, which is about 20 minutes walking distance to the walled medieval town.
