Vannes is a coastal town on the Gulf of Morbihan, in the district of Morbihan, in Brittany, France. The town covers 32 sq km (12.5 sq mi) and has a population of 52,000 people (2012 estimate).
Vannes was established by seafaring Celtic people before the Roman period. At that time the area was in southwestern Armorica, in Gaul. The Romans under Julius Caesar captured the area in 56 BC.
Today Vannes is a popular tourist destination due to its well-preserved old town which has many beautiful timber-framed houses. Among the places to find such houses include Place Henri IV.
