Bad Harzburg is a town in the district of Goslar in Lower Saxony. It occupies 65.42 sq km (25.26 sq mi) and has a population of 22,000 people (2012 estimate). The town sits on the northern edge of the Harz Mountains, and as its name suggests, it is a spa resort.
Bad Harzburg is said to date back to AD 780 when Charlemagne built a chapel on the hill Burgberg overlooking the site of the town. King Conrad I established a college of canons there in 916. It was transferred to Goslar by King Henry III in 1039.
