Dessau is a town in the state of Saxony-Anhalt in Germany. It is located at the confluence of the river Elbe and the Mulde. The town covers 183 sq km (71 sq mi) and has a population of 77,000 people, making it the third largest city in the state behind Halle and Magdeburg.
Dessau's history goes back to 1213. At the time of the Holy Roman Empire, it was the capital of the principality of Anhalt. After the principality disintegrated, it became the capital of the mini-state of Anhalt-Dessau until 1918.
Dessau hosted the architecture college Bauhaus after it was forced out of Weimar in 1925. The college remained in Dessau until 1931, when the Nazis closed it down. By then the Bauhaus architectural style has taken root in the town. In 1996, the Bauhaus architectural heritage of Dessau and Weimar were recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
