Freiburg was founded in AD 1120 as a free market town. Its name "Freiburg" literally means "free borough" or "free fortified town". Today the city is a major commercial center in the Upper Rhine region.
Due to its location as a gateway to the Black Forest, Freiburg is today a major tourist destination, particularly for local German tourists as well as those from Switzerland and France. It has the longest cable-car run in Germany, spanning a distance of 3.6 km.
