Itzehoe is a town in the district of Steinburg, in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. The town on the river Stör serves as district capital for Steinburg. It covers 28 sq km (11 sq mi) and has a population of 32,000 people (2012 estimate).
With a history stretching back to AD 809, when it was established by Egbert, one of the counts to Charlemagne, Itzehoe is the oldest town in Holstein. Through its long history, it had gone by various names and spellings including Esseveldoburg, Eselfleth and Ezeho. It was destroyed by Swedes twice in its history, in 1644 and 1657. Along with the rest of Schleswig-Holstein, it came under Prussian rule in 1867.
A short distance from Itzehoe is Wilstermarsch, which is 3.54 meters below sea level. That area is the lowest part of Germany.
