Marburg is a city in the district of Marburg-Biedenkopf, in Hesse, Germany. The city covers 124.5 sq km (48.1 sq mi) and has a population of 81,000 people (2012 estimate).
Marburg traces its history to around the 9th century, when a settlement was established at the crossroad of important trade routes. A castle was built here to protect the settlement and to collect tax. It was given town status in 1140.
Marburg served as the capital of Landgraviate of Hesse from 1264 until 1540, and again from 1567 to 1605. Its main rival at that time was the Archbishopric of Mainz. In 1527, the University of Marburg (Philipps-Universität-Marburg) was founded, making it the oldest Protestant-founded university in the world. Today the city has one of the most progessive schools for the blind in the world. Marburg is at the forefront in introducing crossing signals that are friendly to the blind.
