Meiningen is a town on the western part of the state of Thuringia, in eastern Germany. It covers 59 sq km (23 sq mi) and has a population of 21,000 people (2012 estimate). The town serves as the seat of Schmalkalden-Meiningen district and is regarded as the cultural center for southern Thuringia.
The town of Meiningen dates back to AD 982, though it was only mentioned i9n writing in 1230. It served as the capital of the Duchy of Saxe-Meiningen from 1680 to 1918, when the duchy was abolished. As with many towns in Germany, it suffered heavy aid raid during the Second World War. It became part of East Germany after the war, and became part of the re-established state of Thuringia following German reunification in 1990.
