Tübingen is a university town in Baden-Württemberg, in southwestern Germany. It covers 108.12 sq km (41.75 sq mi) and has a population of 90,000 (2011 estimate), of which the student body comprises 22,000 people. The city is neat, with charming period buildings tucked into its forested setting beside the river Neckar. The highest point in Tübingen is in the Schönbuch forest, rising to around 500 m (1,640 ft).

Tübingen is located on a ridge between the Neckar and Ammer rivers, about 30 km (20 mi) to the south of Stuttgart. The mountains of the Swabian Albs are about 20 km to the southeast of Tübingen while the forested nature park of Schönbuch is to the north. Tübingen observes the Central European Time, which is an hour ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC+1) and two hours ahead during Daylight Saving Time in summer.

The Tübingen area has been inhabited for thousands of years. The Romans established an outpost here in AG 85. The present city of Tübingen dates from around th 6th century, when the area was populated by the Alamanni tribe. The city was first mentioned in official records in AD 1191.

In around 1470, the St George's Collegiate Church was built, and through it's office, came the founding of the Eberhard Karls University in 1477. This is today one of the oldest universities in Central Europe and an influential place of learning in the Holy Roman Empire. It is still today the main source of income for the city, being one of the biggest universities in Germany.

The leading German newspaper Allgemeine Zeitung was founded in Tübingen in 1798. As in the rest of Germany, the Jews in Tübingen suffered under the Nazis, having their synagogue razed on 9 November, 1938. However the city was spared large scale bombing, a good fortune shared with other German university towns such as Heidelberg and Göttingen. Following the Second World War, Tübingen was made the capital of the state of Württemberg-Hohenzollern which existed from 1946 until 1952, when it was merged with Baden and Württemberg-Baden to form Baden-Württemberg.
