Würzburg is a city in Lower Franconia, on the western part of the state of Bavaria, Germany. Located on the river Main, the city covers 88 sq km (34 sq mi) and has a population of 134,000 people (2012 estimate). It is roughly of equal distance from Frankfurt and Nuremberg, both being approximately 120 km (75 mi) away.

Human habitation in the Würzburg area has been traced to the Bronze Age. Early groups living here include the Celts, following which came the Alamanni and the Franks. The city was first mentioned in a document in AD 704, as in castellum Virteburch.

Würzburg Cathedeal, the most important religious building in the city, traces its history to the first church built on its present site in AD 788 and consecrated by Charlemagne. In 1402 the University of Würzburg was first founded, and reestablished in 1582.

Würzburg suffered terribly during World War II. A major bombing raid staged by 225 British bombers on 16 March, 1945 destroyed 90% of its buildings - in a matter of 17 minutes. It killed over five thousand people. After the war, reconstruction continued for some twenty years with many historical buildings being painstakingly re-built to their former design. The US Army maintained a presence in the city until 2008.

World Heritage Site

The Würzburger Residence, one of the finest palaces in Europe, is recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO during the 5th session of the World Heritage Committee in Sydney, Australia, in 1981.
