Agios Nikolaos, Crete

Agios Nikolaos (Greek: Άγιος Νικόλαος) is a town on the island of Crete, in Greece. It is located to the east of the island capital Heraklion. The municipality of Agios Nikolaos covers 512 sq km (198 sq mi) and has a population of 19,500 people (2012 estimate).

Humans have been living in the Agios Nikolaos area since the late Bronze Age. Its location made it a choice site for a harbor. The town was named after Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors in Greece.

The present municipality of Agios Nikolaos was only formed in 2011 when three former municipalities were merged.
