Bolzano (German: Bozen) is the capital of the German-speaking province of South Tyrol, in the region of Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol, Italy. It is also known by its German name, Bozen. The city covers 52.34 sq km (20.21 sq mi) and has a population of 104,000 people (2012 estimate).
Human habitation in the Bolzano area is traced back to a settlement founded by Romans in 15 BC. The city was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until the First World War, when it was annexed by Italy. During the 1920s, its population was subjected to an Italianization program by Benito Mussolini, partly to dilute its German-speaking populaiton with an influx of Italian-speaking immigrants. As a result, today 73% of its inhabitants speak Italian as their first language while 26% speak German.
Bolzano produces wines, fruits and dairy products. It is also famous for its handicrafts and is becoming a popular tourist destination.
