Caserta is a city in the region of Campania, in southern Italy. It serves as the capital of the province of Caserta. The city is a regional hub for agriculture, commerce and industry. It covers 53 sq km (20 sq mi) and has a population of 80,000 people (2012 estimate).
Caserta was established when the Lombards ruled the area. The city has a number of neighborhoods, including Casetavecchia, which is the former bishopric seat. The Palace of Caserta is today a World Heritage Site recognized by UNESCO.

You can reach Caserta by train from Naples and from Rome. By road, take the A1 (E45) expressway heading north out of Naples until you reach Caserta.
