Castellabate is a small town in the province of Salerno, in the region of Campania, in southwestern Italy. It covers 36 sq km (14 sq mi) and has a population of 8,200 people (2013 estimate).
The area around Castellabate has been inhabited since ancient times. The modern city is closely associated with Saint Costabile Gentilcore from the 12th century. He constructed the local castle and named the site Castrum Abbatis, meaning "castle of the abbot". The name of the town is derived from Castrum Abbatis.
