Krasnoyarsk (Russian: Красноярск) is a city in Siberia, Russia. Located on the Yenisei River, it is the administrative center of Krasnoyarsk Krai. Krasnoyarsk covers 348 sq km (134 sq mi) and has a population of 974,000 people (2012 estimate). This makes it the third largest city in Siberia after Novosibirsk and Omsk.

Krasnoyarsk serves as a major junction for the Trans-Siberian Railway. It was established in 1628 as a border fort to protect the frontier against attacks by locals. It is one of the southernmost limits of Russian expansion in the 17th century, along with Kansk. Originally, a fort named Karsny Yar was built. It was name after the site, which was then known as Yarin.

In 1822, the village of Karsny Yar was given town status, and at the same time, it was renamed Krasnoyarsk. By the 19th century, Krasnoyarsk has evolved into an administrative center and manufacturing hub. The discovery of gold as well as other minerals further fueled its development. Then the railway line was built in 1895, making Krasnoyarsk one of the major towns in Siberia.

During the Stalinist period, Krasnoyarsk was a major center of the gulag system and site of a labor camp. The city also benefited during the Second World War, as factories in the Ukraine and Western Russia were relocated there.

The fall of the Soviet Union brought a period of upheaval and chaos to Krasnoyarsk. Many of its industries collapsed or were taken over by organizations with alleged criminal associations. At that time, unemployment rose, as did the number of strikes. The economic situation has improved since the election of Pyotr Pimashkov as mayor in 1996. Today the city has modernized and is developing itself as a tourist destination in Siberia.
