Pyatigorsk (Russian: Пятиго́рск) is a city in southwestern Russia. It serves as the administrative center for the federal subject of Stavropol Krai as well as the North Caucasian Federal District. The city spreads over 97 sq km (37 sq mi) and has a population of 142,000 people (2012 estimate).
Pyatigorsk was founded in 1780. Its name which means "five mountains" was given in reference to the five peaks of the Beshtau mountains, which are part of the Caucasian mountain range. In the early 19th century Pyatigorsk developed as a health spa because of the presence of mineral springs in the area. The springs are said to have been first discovered by the 14th century Arabian traveler Ibn Battuta. When the therapeutic properties of the springs were recognized, Emperor Alexander I made them state property.
Today Pyatigorsk continues to attract tourists as a health resort. It has also developed other industries ranging from food and textile to machinery. The city was where Russian poet Mikhail Lermontov was shot dead in a dual. There are today a number of sights attributed to him in the city.
