Stavropol (Russian: Ста́врополь) is a city in southwestern Russia. It is the administrative center for Stavropol Krai. The city covers 242.36 sq km (93.58 sq mi) and has a population of 398,000 people (2012 estimate).
Stavropol was established as a military encampment during the Russo-Turkish War of 1768-1774. It was one of the ten fortresses founded by Prince Grigory Potemkin at the request of Catherine the Great. The name was a Russian version of Stauropolis, a fictitious Greek name, meaning "city of the cross".
In the 19th century, Stavropol grew into a major trading center for the North Caucasus. It was made the seat of the Stavropol Governorate in 1847. The city changed hands between the White Army and Red Army during the Russian Civil War. For a period from 1935 to 1943, it was renamed Voroshilovsk, in honor of Kliment Voroshilov.
