Taganrog (Russian: Таганрог) is a port city in southwestern Russia. It is located on the north shore of Taganrog Bay which opens into the Sea of Azov, in Rostov Oblast. The city covers 111 sq km (43 sq mi) and has a population of 258,000 people (2012 estimate).
The history of human habitation in the Taganrog area goes back to the late Bronze Age and early Iron Age. It was the earliest Greek settlement in the northwestern Black Sea Region. The settlement was known to the ancient Greeks as Emporion Kremnoi.
The modern city of Taganrog traces its beginnings to Peter the Great, who established the first Russian naval base here in 1698. Later on, it was home to the Azov Flotilla under the reign of Catherine the Great. The flotilla formed the basis for the Russian Black Sea Fleet.
By the end of the 18th century, with the Crimea and the Sea of Azov becoming part of the Russian Empire, Taganrog saw its role as a military base diminished. Instead it began to develop as a commercial port.
Taganrog was occupied by the Nazis during the Second World War from 1941 until 1943, when the Red Army retook the city. Today the city is a center for a number of industries including aerospace, automobile, iron, food and chemical, among others.
