Tver (Russian: Тверь) is a city in western Russia. It is the administrative center of Tver Oblast. The city at the confluence of the Volga and Tvertsa Rivers covers 152 sq km (59 sq mi) and has a population of 404,000 people (2012 estimate).

The earliest recorded mention of Tver was in 1135. From the 13th century, it was ruled by a line of local princes descended from Yaroslav Yaroslavich, the younger brother of Alexander Nevsky.

A great fire devastated Tver in 1763. After that it was rebuilt with Neoclassical buildings. In 1931 the city was renamed Kalinin in honor of Soviet leader Mikhail Kalinin. It reverted to its original name in 1990.
