Muri is situated at an altitude of 460 m (1,509 ft), at the upper reaches of the Bünztal valley, at the foot of Lindenberg. The area has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. The Romans established a settlement here in the 1st century AD, while the present village dates to its founding in the 8th or 9th century.
The main attraction of Muri is its Benedictine monastery. The monastery traces its history to 1027, when the Muri Abbey was founded. By the 19th century it had fallen into disrepair, and was eventually razed by a fire in 1889. In 1960, over seventy years later after it burned down, the monastery was meticulously restored. And then a new group of Benedictine monks moved in, and started a hospice.
Today's visitors can now visit the monastery and look at some of its oldest parts. There is its presbytery, in the Romanesque style, the crypt, and the transept, among others. The church itself dates to the 17th century. It wears an octagonal dome. Next to it are the cloisters where the hearts of Emperor Karl I and his wife Zita were buried.
Apart from Muri Abbey, another sight of interest in Muri is the Parish Church of St Goar. It dates from 1030, with the earliest parts to survive from 1335. The church has been rebuilt over the centuries, with renovations carried out in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.
