Olten covers 11.49 sq km (4.44 sq mi) and has a population of 18,000 (2011 estimate). Its geographical location makes it an ideal rail hub, as it is just 30 minutes by train from Zürich, Bern, Basel and Lucerne.

Olten was founded in 1201, originally called Oltun. Its location on the Aare River makes it an important medieval trading town. The Old Town is located on the bed between the river Aare and Dünnern. Within the town are remnants of Roman era settlements as well as those from the medieval age. These historic sites are now preserved as heritage sites of national significance.
