The history of Scuol goes back to 1095, when it was first mentioned, originally as Schulles. The town has changed its name a few times during the 20th century. It was known by the German name of Schuls until 1943, when it became Bad Scuol/Schuls. In 1970, it dropped Schuls, and became just Bad Scuol. Then in 1999, it also dropped Bad, become what it's known today, Scuol.

Scuol is one of the towns and villages in the Engadine Valley where the Romansh language predominates. It is spoken by 49.43% of the population in 2000, down from 64.79% during the 1980 census. In comparison, German speakers have increased from 27.75% to 39.16% over the same period.

Scuol experiences the warmest month in July, when the average high temperature rises to 21.9°C (71.4°F). Coldest month is January, when the average low temperature dips to -8.9°C (16°F). August is the wettest month, receiving 96 mm (3.78 in) of rain.

Scuol has three sights listed as Swiss heritage sites of national significance. They are the Baselgia refurmada, the Chasa Wieland Nr. 29 and Kurhaus Bad Tarasp.
