Zurich, also written Zürich in German, is the biggest city in Switzerland. It covers 91.88 sq km (35.48 sq mi) on the northwestern tip of Lake Zurich, and has a population of about 372,000 (2011 estimate) within a metropolitan area of about 2 million people.

Zurich is the capital of the Zurich canton. It has the largest airport and train station in the country. The city is regarded as a global city and one of the foremost financial centers of the world. Due to its attractive tax incentives, it attracts many overseas companies in setting up their headquaters there.
The area where Zurich is located has been inhabited since before Roman times. Excavations have revealed pre-Roman Celtic settlements in the area. The old city of Zurich was established in around the 13th century, when its city walls were built to enclose an area of 38 hectares.
Zurich became a member of the Swiss Confederacy on 1 May, 1351. It was temporarily expelled from the confederacy between 1440 and 1450 when it was embroiled in a war with the other member states over the territory of Toggenburg.
Zurich is 408 m above sea level. It is nestled in a valley, on the northern end of Lake Zurich. Lindenhof, a small hill on the west bank of the Limmat river, is regarded as the geographic center of the city. Zurich experiences a humid continental climate. The coldest month is Zurich is January, when the average temperature drops to -0.5°C (31.1°F) while July is the warmest month, with an average temperature of 17.6°C (63.7°F). The summer months are also the wettest, with the heaviest rainfall in August, at 121 mm (4.76 in)

You can easily reach Zurich by plane or train. Zurich Airport (ZRH) is the biggest airport in Switzerland. It receives flights from major cities in Europe and North America as well as selected cities in other continents.
The Hauptbahnhof, or main railway station, of Zurich is also the biggest in Switzerland. You can catch high-speed inter-city trains such as the German ICE, French TGV and Italian Cisalpino from various cities in Europe to Zurich.
