Burnley is about 34 km (21 mi) to the north of Manchester and 40 km (25 mi) east of Preston.
The area around Burnley has been inhabited as early as 600 BC, as evidenced with the discovery of Stone Age flint tools. The town itself was established as a farming village some 700 years ago. Little is known of it until the 19th century, when it grew rapidly as a mill town, when Lancashire was the center in the production of cotton fabric.
The textile industry reached its height at the turn of the 20th century. The tumultuous years of the First World War brought hardship and a gradual decline of the industry. The town underwent urban renewal in the 1960s, when many old buildings were torn down to make way for new construction projects.

Among those that fell to the sleighhammer included the market hall, the cattle market and the Odean cinema. In their place came the Charter Wall shopping centre, Centenary way and Trafalgar flats, among others. Racial tension between the whites and Asian communities erupted in violence in June 2001. In 2009, a £1.5 million mosque, the Jamia Masjid Ghausia, was opened in Daneshouse, Burnley. It was the first purpose-built mosque in the town.

- Gawthorpe Hall: Elizabethan house near Padiham, Burnley. Its history goes back to 1600.
- Singing Ringing Tree: A wind-powered sound sculpture set in the Pennine mountain range overlooking Burnley.
- St Peter's Church: Anglican church in Burnley. Its oldest part dates to the 15th century.
- Towneley Park: Country estate with Towneley Hall, a large country house, dating back to the 19th century.
