Knaresborough dates back to Norman times. It was listed in Domesday Book of 1086 as Chenaresburg. In around 1100 Knaresborough Castle was built, and the town developed around it. Around the same time St John's Church was also established.

Knaresborough had a market operating since as early as 1206, even though it was only granted a market charter in 1310 by King Edward II. This market is still being held every Wednesday.
