Skipton is a market town in Craven district, on the southwestern part of North Yorkshire, England. The town, which has a population of some 15,000 people (2012 estimate) lies on the River Aire. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal also passes through it. It is 61 km (38 miles) from York.
The history of Skipton is traced to 1085. It was listed in the Domesday Book which was compiled in 1086. The settlement grew around Skipton Castle, which was built in 1090. It played a role in the English Civil War in the 17th century, and served as a prisoner-of-war camp during the First World War.
Skipton was part of the West Riding of Yorkshire until a change in boundary in 1974, which puts it within North Yorkshire.
