Sultan Ismail Petra Arch, Kota Bharu (29 April, 2017)
Sultan Ismail Petra Arch (GPS: 6.13125, 102.23669), or Pintu Gerbang Kota Sultan Ismail Petra, is a grand arch in the centre of Kota Bharu, Kelantan. Comprising a double gateway, it faces Jalan Sultanah Zainab, the main road through town. The arch was built in the 1990s, when Kota Bharu was designated a cultural city. The gateway leads to a parking area that was once the compound of the Kota Bharu Grand Palace (Istana Balai Besar), where in the old days, bullfights were held.
The design of the Sultan Ismail Petra Arch replicates the palisaded gateway of the grand palace. Each gateway is flanked by three columns on each side. The lintel of the archway bears gilded inscriptions of Islamic calligraphy. The columns are embellished with floral motif. Standing at the centre, between the two gateways is a main column bearing the sculpture of a Koran.
Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
