Jalan Masjid, George Town, Penang (30 November 2022)
Jalan Masjid, formerly known as
Mesjid Road or
Mosque Street, is a small, almost obscure road off
Chulia Street in
George Town, Penang. It was named after Masjid Ali Arshahan, one of the small Indian Muslim mosques located along this part of Chulia Street. The mosque was founded in 1840 but is no longer in use. Next to it is a Muslim burial ground that is still there, along with
Makam Maulana Miskin Waliallah, one of the Indian Muslim mausoleums from the early part of the 20th century.
Erected along Jalan Masjid are double-storey shophouses in the Straits Eclectic style. These date from the 1930's, as the area around Chulia Street began to take on a more Chinese appearance, with the decline in the Indian Muslim population.
